Ages 9-12
Although the king and queen give her a big birthday party, nobody except a young organ grinder and his monkey really cares whether the princess is enjoying herself.

This book is very well-written and exquisitely illustrated, but some parents will definitely recoil from tis core message: a princess who is non treated well by her parents runs away from the castle and lives happily ever after with her vagabond friends. This raises some potentially uncomfortable questions, like: is it OK to run away from home if you are unhappy? Why were the girl's parents so mean to her? Why didn't the princess go home when her parents were sad about her being missing?
All that being said, this book has a lot going for it, and I personally enjoyed, but I hope that my daughter doesn't recall it too clearly if we have a fight about something!
