Camille and the Sunflowers
Reading level:
Ages 4-8
"Where Camille lived, the sunflowers grew so high they looked like real suns. . . ." So begins this fascinating tale of Camille, a little boy who meets a man with a yellow beard. This man is Vincent van Gogh, and they become best friends. The story, based on a true-life incident, is beautifully illustrated in full-color, including reproductions of some of van Gogh's paintings.

My children and I all adored this book. It is a slightly-fictionalized retelling of the circumstances under which Vincent Van Gogh created many of his famous paintings while living in France. He is befriended by a little boy named Camille and Camille's family. The rest of the residents of the town don't understand or approve of Van Gogh and his work.
The artwork is gorgeous, and your kids will only benefit from the message of open-mindedness, friendliness and welcoming.
At the end of the book, there is a short biography of Van Gogh, and that might be a little intense for younger readers, given its honesty about Van Gogh's suicide and self-mutilation. So, read it yourself before you read it to your little ones.
