I use this book in my classroom. We use it to talk about community helpers and we draw a map for the ducks, using the tale of Mr and Mrs. Mallard to practice our map skills.
This superb book always makes me feel just a little bit of pride in being a Bostonian. Sure, this story could have happened in most any city that is near water, but the fact that it is based on a true story of my home town is a special thing.
Any child who enjoys this book will love to visit Boston's Public Gardens, which features statues of Mrs. Mallard and her ducklings.
The wonderful story and inimitable artwork will capture young readers as only Robert McCloskey can.
