The Old Pirate of Central Park
by Robert Priest
Reading level: Ages 4-8

A retired pirate who lives in Manhattan builds a model of his old ship, The Laughing Dog.  The first day that he sails it on Central Park's Sailboat Pond, he comes into conflict with a retired queen who is sailing her boat, the S.S. Uppity Duchess.  The queen fails to respect the nautical rights of others, and the two boats begin firing their tiny cannons at each other.

Eventually, the two sides call a truce, and the Old Pirate and Old Queen become good friends

This is one of the best books that I've ever read to my children.  The artwork is elegant and unusual, resembling woodcuts.  The story is clever and engaging, and it has humorous elements that will appeal to the adult reader.  Anyone who has any familiarity with Manhatten and New Yorkers will get a big smile out of the protrayal of the people and animals that populate this incredible little book.

Can't reccomend it highly enough.
