As the only black barber in a county of sharecroppers during the 1920s, Uncle Jed traveled for miles to tend to his customers. This book is charming and honest. When the little girl in the story has to wait to be seen by the doctors until all the white patients are treated, my students are always struck by the injustice of it. This book not only does a great job teaching about segregation and the Great Depression, it also touches on the economic concepts of earning money and saving money.
